Safety Rules for Travel

Traveling alone can be a scary and dangerous way to travel.  Solo travelers often make better marks for criminals.  The cheap flights, cheap hotels and other great deals that are available these days have made traveling – even alone – something that more people are considering.  Safety during those travels can be increased by following a few rules.

Safety Rules for Travel

  1. Leave your valuable at home.  Criminals are less likely to target you if you are not flashing around expensive jewelry or electronics. Any items that are not essential for your travel should be left at home.
  2. Stay in the interior rooms near the front desk. Even the cheap hotels can offer a little more safety when the attendants are close by.
  3. Avoid wandering around at night. There are just too many shadows and dark places for criminals to hide.
  4. Skip the alcohol.  Traveling alone is not the time to have a wild party time. Alcohol impairs judgment and makes you an easier target.
  5. Keep your information to yourself.  Do not share that you are traveling alone with strangers in a restaurant, club or bar. Many times these conversations are just a way of gauging the ease of a potential target.
  6. Have a plan.  Know where you are going and how to get there. Wandering around with a map in your hand is a sure way of marking yourself as a target to any bad guys that are watching.
  7. Cut back on the cash.  Only carry around the amount of cash that you need for that day. Leave your other cash locked in a hotel safe or only take out from the ATMs what you need as you go.

Cheap flights and cheap hotels have made putting together travel packages something even the budget conscious can do.  Traveling alone is not always the best way to travel but sticking to some basic guidelines can help make the experience much safer.
