The Blackpool Illuminations Are Just One of the Town’s Big Events For 2010
Long considered Britain’s finest tourist resort and beach destination, Blackpool has prided itself over the decades as a seasonal getaway that has something for everyone; whether its donkey rides on the beach, superb fish and chips or a knuckle whitening rollercoaster ride. Of course, though, like every popular destination, some of Blackpool’s finest attractions and events are often overlooked in favour of the town’s more glamorous streak, as in fact, Blackpool isn’t a summer getaway at all, but an all year-round one.
2010 has a lot in store for Blackpool, kicking off with ‘This Is Blackpool’, a retrospective writing and photography collaboration to collect residents’ and visitors’ stories and images of the iconic town through the ages. February sees the famous Great North West Run return for another year as the much loved half-marathon makes its way through Blackpool again, and past the cheering crowds. For a spellbinding cabaret experience like none other, La Clique is performing from 12 – 20 February too, after sell-out shows the world over.
Originally performed at the Theatre Royal in Stratford East, Come Dancing is a song and dance musical that stars and was written by former Kinks singer-songwriter, Ray Davies, and will stop at the Blackpool Grand Theatre for six nights in April. Equally entertaining but entirely different, legendary showman and modern-day illusionist Derren Brown will be coming to Blackpool with his sell-out show of mind boggling spectacles.
May also sees Blackpool Pride swing into full motion. This much celebrated carnival parade returns for its fifth year as the seafront becomes the place to be for top class cabaret performers and a great fun day out. As the celebratory procession makes its way through town, expect bands, floats and fancy dress as street entertainment becomes the dish of the day.
Vintage car fans will relish July’s Fleetwood Transport Festival. Not just for vehicle enthusiasts, this annual rally in Fleetwood features classic vintage cars and motorcycles alongside fairground rides, street entertainers, bands and much more on the day. Another popular local event is the St Anne’s Charity Carnival which raises money for many local charities as the floats ride through town.
Welcome the Red Arrows and friends back to Blackpool in August as the Blackpool Annual Air show gets underway. Come September, another spectacle will be taking over Blackpool’s skies for everyone to enjoy; the famous Blackpool Illuminations. With the ‘Celebrity Switch-on’ taking place on the historic promenade on the 3 September, this world-famous free light show has been enthralling audiences since 1879. For the best view of the lights, take a tram ride along the route they follow.
The winter season still shines in Blackpool as pantomime season begins. 2010 will see a choice of classics playing across Blackpool’s best theatres, as the town warmly embraces this family season. There are many great hotels in Blackpool, so book early to begin planning your trip.
