Packing Plastic: Running A Slick Vacation Operation
Some people take everything but the kitchen sink when they go on holiday, whilst others prefer to run a slicker vacation operation on their travels.
Those who pack a family-sized suitcase for themselves may have to hang around airports for hours, checking-in at the domestic end, and waiting at the carousel at the destination. Conversely, those who pack light can check-in online at home the night before, throw a few choice items in a compact case, do a quick passport and credit card check and make sure they’re at the airport half an hour or so before their flight departs.
People who travel a lot tend to hone and fine-tune their travelling methods as they go along, looking at ways to streamline their journey from A to B.
Take the issue of currency, for example. Most people will be familiar with the last-gasp dash to the Post Office to exchange their domestic dosh for continental currency. Depending on the destination, it’s possible the Post Office only has a limited amount of cash in stock. And for those still living in the dark ages, then travellers’ cheques might be an option, though cashing them at the other end can be a bit of a mission.
In the 21st century world of e-commerce, all that’s needed at any time to procure products and services is a simple plastic card. Why wait in line at the bureau de change, often to receive a less-than-generous rate of exchange, when you can simply arrive at your destination and spend your hard earned cash in exactly the same way as you do at home?
Whether it’s a debit card or a credit card, the chances are it can be used to withdraw funds from an ATM or pay at the point of sale at the foreign destination. It’s convenient and you can check statements online at any point to keep track of all your spending.
However, there is one added benefit to using a UK credit card over a debit card. From booking your flight online, all the way through to securing accommodation and paying for other travel-related services, any purchase that’s put on a credit card is secured. So if, for example, you book a holiday online and the airline or travel agency goes bust, your money is protected by the credit card company. Purchase protection for ease of mind.
So ditch that family-sized suitcase, grab a satchel and pack your plastic for a stress-free trip. Oh, and don’t forget your passport either.
